A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR SHOPIFY MERCHANTS

How to write Shopify product descriptions with AI

Turn incomplete supplier copy into a clear product page. Start with verified facts, use AI for a draft, and review every claim before you publish.

1. Gather the facts AI should preserve

A short source description can still be useful if its facts are reliable. Check supplier data, the product label and your existing Shopify listing. Keep measurements, composition and model numbers exactly as confirmed.

  • Identity: brand, model number, product type and intended customer.
  • Specifications: verified material composition, dimensions, size information and compatibility where relevant.
  • Visible details: color, closure and pockets, checked against the real item or original photos.
  • Store voice: output language, tone and the sections your customer needs.

Leave unknown information out until you can confirm it. A jacket photo does not establish waterproofing, warmth ratings or care instructions. Keep delivery and returns in the appropriate store policies instead of asking AI to invent them for each product.

2. Give AI a specific drafting task

Ask for clear copy with a short introduction and a scannable details section. Supply your facts and set a boundary around missing information. You can use this template with an AI writing tool:

Write an English product description for this Shopify product.
Use only the verified facts below. Preserve brand and model names.
Do not add performance claims, measurements or care instructions
unless provided. List missing facts separately for me to check.
Use a short introduction and a concise product details section.

Product: [brand, product type, model]
Verified facts: [materials, dimensions, confirmed details]
Customer and tone: [audience, plain / technical / conversational]

Read the first draft before asking for more versions. If a sentence sounds persuasive but has no source, remove it or check it. Changing the tone should never change the product specifications.

3. See what changes in a real product example

Our existing demonstration uses a blue U.S. Polo Assn. men’s hooded jacket, model 60614-46019. The original description supplied the model number and the 50% nylon, 50% polyester composition. The app output was reviewed and edited for the demonstration.

Source description

Blue U.S. Polo Assn. men’s hooded jacket. Model 60614-46019. Fabric: 50% nylon, 50% polyester.

A clear, fact-based introduction

This blue U.S. Polo Assn. men’s hooded jacket is model 60614-46019. Its fabric composition is 50% nylon and 50% polyester.

An editorial example based on those source facts, not a new generation or an unedited AI result.

The demonstration also shows quilted stitching, a front zipper and pocket details. Check those against the original item before using them in your listing. Avoid upgrading visible features into claims such as “waterproof,” “winter-rated” or “sustainable” without evidence.

4. Prepare SEO text and catalog tags separately

Your product description explains the item to a shopper. The SEO title identifies the page; the meta description gives a short, relevant summary. Tags organize your catalog. Give each field a clear purpose.

Example fields for the same jacket

SEO title
U.S. Polo Assn. Blue Hooded Jacket Model 60614-46019
Meta description
Explore the U.S. Polo Assn. men’s blue hooded jacket, model 60614-46019, with a fabric composition of 50% nylon and 50% polyester.
Catalog tags
men’s jacket, blue jacket, hooded jacket, U.S. Polo Assn., nylon, polyester

Use terms that describe the actual item and match your store’s naming conventions. Do not paste a long keyword list into the meta description. Google may choose a different search snippet from your page content; your supplied meta description is a suggestion. Tags are not a ranking guarantee.

5. Review one product before preparing a batch

Compare the draft with the original source. Check brand spelling, model numbers, composition, measurements, language and unsupported benefits. Preview the page on a phone so headings and lists remain readable.

Once the structure works for your store, reuse the same instructions for a selected group of products. Review each result: products in one collection can still have different materials and specifications. Keep a copy of the original text so you can reverse a change.
